The Heroine making waves in the Alamo City

I was recently able to catch up with the extremely busy Lynnwood King, singer of The Heroine, for a quick Q & A.  The Heroine have been making waves here in SA for many years now and all the recent publicity is well deserved

GTV- Is Lynnwood Presley King your real name or is that a stage name?
KING- Lynnwood Presley King is a pseudonym originally used as the band's booking agent and manager but just stuck after a few years of working under the name.

GTV- What’s the meaning behind the band’s name?
KING - For each of the members it means something different. Heroine is defined as "a woman of distinguished courage or ability, admired for her brave deeds and noble qualities." To me music has always been a way of escape. A special connection spiritually with God and people who listen. I guess music was my Heroine at times, getting me though hard times and keeping me going.

GTV - How would you describe your music to someone who’s never heard it?
KING - We play rock n roll. It's blues driven high energy rock. Lyrically I try to write about what I experience in life. Everyone in the bands works hard. We are all from BLUE COLLAR families. None of us grew up with silver spoons. So we write about our lives. Ups and downs. I feel like our music is real. And people want that. A real story. Songs they connect to.

GTV - What would you say distinguishes your band from all the other emerging bands out there right now?
KING- What separates The Heroine is that we have been doing this for a long time. Like The Kidd says our biggest accomplishment is staying together. We have a musical vision as a band and we have stuck with it through thick and thin.

GTV – Do your religious beliefs ever get in the way of the choices you make for the band?
KING - My faith in Jesus Christ goes beyond music. It is who I am whether I am playing music or doing carpentry. There are personal boundaries I have set up to protect my marriage and my children. Have those boundaries affected my choices? Absolutely. Does it hinder the bands progress and success? Not at all.

GTV - Who is your favorite local band? (other than yours of course)                                                                        KING - Man there is so much talent out there I don't know where to start. Of course Girl in a Coma, Upon A Burning Body, Ledaswan, Pop Pistol, CZARS, Piñata Protest, Drive, man the list goes on and on. San Antonio has been blessed with so many great bands and artists. I only wish clubs and promoters would pay them what they are worth!!

GTV - Any touring going on this year?                                                                                                                  KING - YES. We just wrapped up a West Coast run. We will be touring pretty much the rest of the year. Right now we are hoping to package a good summer / Fall tour with some bigger names. I love being on the road!!

GTV - When’s the next album coming out?                                                                                                            KING - We are writing right now and we will be in the Studio with Jay Baumgardner in June. We will release a couple of singles and then a record hopefully by SXSW 2013.

GTV - How do you feel about the way the local music community is starting to come together here in SA?                   KING - Man it's awesome!! It's great to see bands supporting each other. It is even better to see shows having a mix culture of music too. I love just about every type of music out there and it's good to see shows popping up with a mix of bands and sounds.

GTV - Congratulations on getting on the Bud Light Kiss Fest this May. How do you feel about opening up for a group like Marilyn Manson?
KING - Thank you!! I am so stoked to be a part of this show. As a band we love the opportunity to play our music in front large crowds and this one will be huge!! We are humbled that Marilyn Manson put us on this show. We are also very thankful to AEG LIVE and the 99.5 KISS Family for allowing us the opportunity to be a part of this event.

It was a pleasure to run into such a talented & hard working group of guys such as these.  Their shows are both compelling and highly energetic so make sure and check ‘em out at a venue near you.

See ya on the Strip.
